The Importance of Games and Sports

What is meant by sports … The difference between games and sports … their advantages …… character building ... physical health and strength ……. Forbearance …… discipline ….. Sportsman spirit …… sense of fellowship ….. Sense of honour and truthfulness …… preparation for the future ….

By sports we means out door recreations. There are two elements in it. First is the element of joy or amusement, derived from bodily exercise; and secondly, the element of discipline. In sports, the first element predominates the second and the spirit of joy always pervades. In this respect, sports differ from games, which aim at the development of the body. For example, when a person is busy with his dumbbells in his room, he goes out for hunting, boating, and racing or for a football match, he goes out primarily to enjoy himself, and also to derive some physical benefit out of his sport. Recreation is the principal factor which distinguishes sport form all forms of physical exercise.
If by education we mean the development of mind and body, then sport admirably serve that purpose. They benefit both the mind and the body it is one of the peculiar paradox of life that when we consciously seek joy, half the joy is lost. Real enjoyment in sports, comes when we go out to enjoy ourselves, and the physical benefit, which we are likely to derive from it, is the secondary gain it, and is for this reason that it benefits both the body as well as the mind. Our body and mind profit by sports, more or less, automatically, there is no sense of dullness in sports, as often associated with dumbbells or wresting. Each movement in hunting, boating, or in a football match is full of new thrills, keeping our spirits high. As there an intimate connection between our mind and body, what benefits the mind, also influences our body. Hence, sport serve the purpose of physical exercise, and bring an additional charm in the form of recreation or amusement to the mind.
The joys of sports are totally unexpected. No doubt, we go out for recreation but we have no idea of the nature of joy which we will get there. On the other hand, each stage of the game has its peculiar thrills. When a man goes out to hunt, at every step new arrangements become necessary. This newness is kept up till the end of the adventure, affording him new joy.
A great virtue which we find in a sportsman is his abiding sense of honour and truthfulness, because strict sense of honour marks his conduct.
