Sprouting Fodder for Cheap Chicken Feed

If you are looking for a more natural feed alternative that costs less consider fodder. Fodder is a grain that is sprouted by many different processes. It can be as simple or as difficult as you like. With all the different type of livestock there are many different requirements. I am going to focus on feeding spouted grains like barley and wheat for poultry.

Sprouting chicken feed is very inexpensive. If you are looking to cut feed costs sprouting grain is the way to go. Every pound of grain will turn into 3 pounds of feed when grown. Currently I pay .11 cents a pound for wheat seed. I feed about a ¼ pound per bird per day. This means that sprouting one pound of chicken feed a day will end up feeding 12 chickens each day.

Small Game Poultry

If you are going to enjoy a fine Italian meal today, why not try some small game poultry such as Cornish hens or quail? These tiny cousins of the chicken are absolutely wonderful within a large Italian meal. You can basically serve these tiny birds up in many different fashions, and whatever way you cook them they will be a hit with the family. Game poultry is a very versatile bird, and you can find many recipes today that involve the grilling or salt roasting of these meats. When you are going to cook this type of bird for your family, you will want to include some wonderful grilled vegetables and a fine Italian soup, as this will bring the meal to its peak of perfection.

Free-Range Poultry on an Amish Farm

Melvin Fisher started raising pastured poultry on his Organic Grass Farm in 1997. In 1998, after seeing an article on the free-range system in a magazine Melvin ordered the book Free-Range Poultry Production and Marketing by Herman Beck-Chenoweth. Later he attended a workshop on range poultry production. In 1999 Melvin built six poultry skids using the plans in the book and stocked each with 400 Cornish Cross broilers. He retired the pastured poultry pens and never looked back. In 2002 he produced more than 6,000 chickens and 150 turkeys and dressed them out in America's only U.S.D.A. Inspected non-electric poultry processing facility. This year he expects to raise, sell and process twice as many birds for sale to restaurants in Indiana and for the many customers who pick up at his scenic Park County farm.

Poultry Farming - A Lucrative Business Option

Since the primitive ages, people have been keeping domestic animals in their farms as a source of food. Ever since then, various scientific and organic methods are introduced and animal farming has become a lucrative method of earning money. In the case of poultry farming, basically it is a scientific method of raising ducks, chicken, turkeys, ostriches and some other birds for their eggs or fowl.

As mentioned, there are two ways of doing business in poultry farming, one is to breed fleshy poultry to be sold as meat product, and the other is to breed for the eggs. People prefer poultry meat- especially those of chicken or roosters- to other kinds of meat, because poultry meat comes in an affordable price, while providing all the essential minerals and vitamins for the human body. As for the eggs, scientific development has helped to increase yield by improving both the quantity and quality of the eggs.

Poultry Water Quality Program

I. Water is Part of Your Bio-security Program

Water sources available to livestock have been identified as important biosecurity and agroterrorism concerns. Many foodborne pathogens can be spread throughout the flock via the drinking water. Protective measures need to be in place to reduce vulnerability for microbial infection.

The USDA is actively pursuing means of reducing foodborne pathogens at the processing level. Currently, more emphasis is being placed at reducing harmful bacteria at the grower's level.

The Poultry Farm That I Never Owned

I have read so many success tips for entrepreneurs on poultry farming. As a wise farmer, I learned over time that so many farm produce are somehow seasonal. That means, there are times of massive sales or patronage, and times of low demand from customers.

Poultry business which is mainly a business for all kinds of birds/fowls: chickens, turkeys, ostriches, ducks, guinea fowls, etc., is one among the seasonal businesses. Just like chickens, no farmer looks up to immediate harvest of reared turkeys in less than 7 months. Chickens are different. The genetically prepared chickens or egg-laying breeds are kept for their egg-laying abilities. They are usually poor meat producers because they have small bodies. The meat producers are not expected to be laying eggs, only the dual-purpose breeds are; they lay eggs as well as produce meat.

A Complete Guide on Setting Up Your Own Poultry Farm

Some people even those living in big cities are still very country at heart. They crave the morning crow of the rooster and the smell of freshly picked eggs from the farm. If you are one such person who loves poultry and the country life you can be very successful in poultry farming. But this is not less than any other business that anyone would start. This requires a lot of careful planning, a lot of investment in all the equipment that will be required and even some research on the methods, techniques, and market that you plan on serving with your business. On top of that there are legal regulations pertaining to starting poultry farming which mostly restrain you to the place where you can start it. Most laws will discourage you in starting farming in a residential area where your neighbors will be disturbed by the constant crowing of roosters and the mess that poultry makes.

Investing in Poultry Farming in Uganda

So you want to do business in Uganda by investing in poultry farming and "Mavi ya kuku"?

For start, I am not abusing anyone like Uganda's Col. Kahinda Otafire and his, shall I call them "famous euphemisms" including the "Mavi ya Kuku" statement. For the uninitiated, "Mavi ya kuku" is a Swahili word to refer to chicken droppings and when you deal with chicken you will have to literally get your feet deep in chicken s%*t (literally) but I will tell you about these are money makers later on. I present my analysis on investment in the poultry sub sector in Uganda.

Public Health Safety of Bacteriophages in Ready-To-Eat Meats & Poultry Products

Introduction

Recently approval has been given by the USFDA for use of the combination of six bacterial viruses or bacteriophages as a food additive. These bacteriophages are to be used on ready-to-eat meats and poultry to kill strains of listeria monocytogenes prior to their packaging.

Listeria monocytogenes are of major public health concern because it can cause serious infection in pregnant women, newborns and adults with weaken immune systems. It has been estimated that 2,500 people become seriously ill with listeriosis each year. Hence there is a growing need to develop effective treatments against pathogenic microorganisms such as listeria monocytogenes. The approval of bacteriophages by the USFDA for use in ready-to-eat meats and poultry therefore serves to address this public health problem.

More Information About Easter Eggs

Easter eggs are regular chicken eggs that have been especially decorated using dyes of bright colors and done in traditional or contemporary design. The Easter season is a time of celebration and is associated with fertility and rebirth and it has come to represent these ideas in many cultures around the world. For example, in Christianity, Easter eggs or Paschal eggs symbolize the stone tomb of Jesus, which was discovered to be empty after the Resurrection. For them, these are a reminder of eternal life. Nevertheless, decorating eggshells to celebrate Easter is an ancient practice that predates Christian traditions.

Poultry Farming - A Lucrative Business Option

As for the eggs, scientific development has helped to increase yield by improving both the quantity and quality of the eggs.

The best part of poultry farming is that start up investment is not high. The basic equipments include a coop for the poultry birds, a breeding area, a hatchery and a slaughterhouse. The owner must possess the knowledge of scheduling, different types of feeding, workings of the various medicines and breeding procedures etc. Balancing the profit and expenditure would also be essential in order to build a successful business. Data processing software is good investment as well should the finance permits.

Chicken farming has gained the highest popularity among poultry farming due to its easy application methods; among which one of the most popular methods is organic farming. Chicken are bred not within cages, but in open space and they are given natural food. In this way, the chicken can grow in a healthy and natural way.

On the other hand, owners who choose duck farming should pay more attention on the proper medication and feeding procedures. It is noticed that ducklings are easier to breed than grown ducks. Ducks need more living space than chickens, ponds or long yard-like venues are essential for proper breeding. Ducks' reproductive rite is high and hence can yield rapid success.

Owners should beware of the various kinds of poultry disease, as it is one of the biggest concerns for those who raise poultry. Diseases and infections can spread rapidly from one bird to the whole population. Diseases can arise from mismanagement, lack of proper medication, side effects of medicines or improper feeding. Some of the internationally known diseases are Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis and avian influenza. It is better to be equipped with the proper medications and equipments to act quickly in case of emergencies, in order to minimize loss.

Owners should remember to give enough freedom to the birds. It is better not to confine them in the cage all the time but let them out to the open from time to time. Application of different organic methods in the farming process makes the birds healthier and is beneficial for the owners in the long run. Proper care should be taken to maximize gain. At the current growing rate, it can be said that the poultry farming business will not be confined to certain areas in the future.

Poultry farming is only available in rural places. Forming Poultry units only need a low budget and a small land. So it is like generating income that is sufficient for the rural population.

Investigators Link Poultry Contamination on Farm and at Processing Plant

WASHINGTON, DC – May 31, 2013 -- Researchers at the University of Georgia, Athens, have identified a strong link between the prevalence and load of certain food-borne pathogens on poultry farms, and later downstream at the processing plant. They report their findings in a manuscript published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

“This study suggests that reducing foodborne pathogen loads on broiler chicken farms would help to reduce pathogen loads at processing, and may ultimately help to reduce the risk of foodborne illness,” says Roy Berghaus, an author on the study. “This is important because most of our efforts towards reducing foodborne pathogens are currently focused on what happens during processing. Processing interventions are effective but they can only do so much.”
