Making sure your pet is taken care of when you have to leave town can be a very tough thing to do. Luckily there are many options available and each fits a different type of dog. All of these options ensure the health and happiness of your pet and can be pretty easy on your budget as well.
The first option is to have your pet taken care of by someone you know or a professional pet sitter. With this option your pet is able to stay somewhere familiar and still gets the attention that they need. This is a good option for dogs that are nervous in new situations, older dogs who don't like to move a lot, or dogs who do well with being alone.
A pet sitter will ensure your pet is fed, played with, and walked. It is important you feel comfortable with the person you select being in your house. If you are a very private person who does not like people in your personal areas you might want to choose another service to take care of your dog.
You can usually board your pet at your vet's office. Many vets have large areas where your pooch can socialize with other dogs and still be watched. If your pet is not used to sleeping in a cage or if they get nervous when going anywhere with lots of dogs this is not a good option. If you have a dog that needs a lot of special attention and is on different medications this may be the best option.
Vets will usually want your pets to be up to date on their vaccines. This can be the lowest cost option and can be a great way to make sure your pet is in good health as well. As an added bonus if something does go wrong while you are away you know your dog is in the best hands possible.
The third option is a doggie day care or boarding house. With this option your dog is around many other dogs but it is usually a less formal situation than your vets office. This can be the perfect solution for the dog who loves to play at the dog park and say hi to every single dog you see.
If you do go this route you will want to make sure that the dogs get lots of human interaction. Some daycare centers don't have very many staff members and animals may occasionally get out of hand. While this is rare you should consider this if your dog is shy or fragile.
When choosing the best place to board taking into account the temperament of your dog as well as their health problems can answer the question for you. A good boarding option will leave you feeling comfortable and like your dog is in good hand. All of the options should allow you to call and check on your dog and be able to give you up to date information for your peace of mind.
