How to Choose the Best Parrot Breeders

If you are looking to acquire a parrot you have several options. You can buy one from a pet store, adopt one, or buy one from a selection of parrot breeders. There are advantages (and some disadvantages) to each.

Pet stores can be a convenient way to get a parrot but can also be a bit risky. Unlike with a parrot breeder, you don't know how the bird was raised and cared for, or if it was properly socialized.

The same thing applies to adopting from a rescue. It is a very kind thing to do and can, in fact, work out very well. It is best to be at least somewhat experienced with parrots or get a comprehensive education before going this route.

The way your parrot is handled and raised from the moment of hatching has a huge impact on how he interacts throughout his life. The more chances they get to imprint with humans, and the more they get handled while they are young, the more sociable they become. Most parrot breeders focus on raising well socialized birds with congenial personalities.

It is always a good idea to question how often the the breeder has handled your parrot and what he did to socialize your bird. A parrot's socialization and emotional health are heavily impacted by the techniques used by the breeder. In addition to this, making sure the babies are weaned properly before they are sold is another thing parrot breeders are accountable for.

Something else you should look for is a breeder that lets their babies learn how to fly. Some irresponsible breeders don't want to go to the trouble. However, it is in a parrot's best interest for it to learn how to fly. Flying aids in muscle development and circulation and is an important part of a bird's life.

Most parrot breeders are very responsible and caring, but just as with anything else there are some that are only in it to make a quick dollar.

When you are looking for a parrot breeder make sure that you do background research. It wouldn't hurt to ask for and talk to a few references. You might also ask who their veterinarian is and check with them too. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

There are many people that choose to clip their parrot's wings. It is a personal choice, sometimes made because owners are worried about the possibility of their parrots getting out and flying away, while others are more concerned about them flying into, and breaking things around the house. Just make sure to never clip your parrot's wings without first consulting with a veterinarian.

Parrot breeders are responsible for many facets of your future bird's care. A major responsibility when raising healthy parrots is to make sure they are feed safe and nutritious foods. Growing parrots need a variety of different foods (as do older parrots) including fresh fruits and vegetables, pellets, seeds and warm, soft foods.

If you choose to go the route of getting your parrot from a breeder, you will have a better chance of owning a happy, healthy and well adjusted bird if you select one of the knowledgeable and reputable parrot breeders.

Some ways to tell if your breeder is reputable are:

* a willingness to answer questions

* availability to answer questions and give support after purchase

* they should be willing to sign a contract or purchase agreement

* being willing to let prospective buyers view their aviary

Since parrots can live 50 to 60 years and even longer, it can make a huge difference in your "parrot experience" and is well worth the time and effort spent, to look into finding reputable parrot breeders!
