How to Get Veterinary Advice Online

The cat is sick. You call your vet and they are closed. The emergency vet won't give you any information without an expensive

visit first. What do you do?

In many situations like this one, an online veterinarian may be able to help. Here are several types of scenarios where an

online veterinarian can help you:

If your pet is ill but you are not sure if an emergency visit is necessary or whether you should wait to see your vet

when they are open.
If your vet has recommended a procedure or test and you want to get reassurance that this is the best way to go.
If you are looking for a second opinion on your pet's condition.
If you want an opinion on whether the estimate your vet gave you is fair.

As an online veterinarian, I have helped many people who were unable to talk to their regular vets. I get asked questions

about seizuring animals, vomiting animals and so many other situations. I often counsel people to help them to decided when

it is time for euthanasia.

Here are some things that an online vet can NOT do:

    Prescribe medication
Diagnose your pet's condition (but they can give you ideas of what could be going on)
    Prescribe treatment for your pet

If you are asking questions of an online vet here are some tips to help you get the most out of your "visit":

Be sure to include your pet's age, breed and existing health problems.
Be as detailed as possible with your description of your pet's condition.

Here is an example of a question that was asked on an online veterinary advice website.

Dr. Marie is a veterinarian in a busy metropolitan small animal practice. She runs a site where you can ask a vet a question.
