The game works for kids either way for as long as there are enough eggs to find and the people who hid them made sure that they are not too easy to find. However, since the participants are children, organizers also make sure that the hidden items are not too difficult to retrieve.

Though traditionally, the eggs that need to be found are hard boiled chicken eggs, some hunts offer exciting surprises such as candies made of chocolate or artificial eggs filled with candies. In some egg hunts, the artificial eggs are bigger or smaller than regular chicken eggs, which exponentially increase the fun and excitement of the game.

Every year, millions of children look forward to the annual Easter egg hunt, especially if there is a reward at the end of the hunt for the person who has collected the most number of eggs. There are other prizes given as a reward for other remarkable achievements, including an award for the person who found the smallest egg, the largest egg, or perhaps very specific egg that has a special surprise contained within it. Oftentimes, consolation prizes are also given to participants in recognition of their efforts.
