Search engine optimization or SEO is the most useful technique for improving the visibility of a website on the Internet.
Other methods of business promotion are not as beneficial as SEO. Hence, most business owners optimize their websites for the
search engines, especially Google, to make sure that the website gets a lot of visitors on a regular basis. There are
numerous ways through which a website can be optimized for the search engines. Some of these ways are legitimate while others
are not. It is important that you only use the legitimate ways of optimization so that your website is not banned.
Some main areas to have in mind when designing search engine optimization plans for any online channel (Web, mobile, social
media) are as follows:
1. Content - Content is the king and it is the content of the page that influences a position on the search results page. We
need to make sure it's relevant and up-to-date. Spiders like text and not just videos, images or animations. Hence, you
should concentrate on creating quality content for the site and you can also include images or animations to make the content
more exciting for the readers. Make sure that the articles published in the website are free of grammatical and other
language errors.
2. Keywords - The content of the website should truly reflect what the business has to offer and it should not be misleading.
For example, if your company makes teddy bears, the word "teddy bear" and all its synonyms should appear in the title,
description and throughout all elements of the website, page, etc. In this example, the word "teddy bear" will be the keyword
for the website. However, keywords shouldn't be abused though; 'spiders' are too clever for such tricks nowadays. Utilizing
metadata is a good practice to attract the attention of the search engine 'spiders'.
3. Links - Links to and from the website are important as they help the 'spider' to place it within the network of websites.
This is where the web designer/ developer will need to worry more than marketers. The links work as an indication of the type
of website and its quality of content. For example, if a lot of sites that talk about talk about toys link to a site that
makes toys for kids, the site will be indexed more frequently by the search engines.
4. Images and other visual content - Those marketers who work with content management software (CMS), often ignore the 'image
description' box many times. However, it should not be ignored. The search engine 'spiders' can't see through an image or a
video, and the 'image or video description' is all they care about. If the description box is left blank, the image or the
video will not be able to improve the position of the website in the search engine results.
5. Design - The design of the website should be such that the users should find it easier to locate the information they
require. The search engine 'spider' will try to locate information related to the keywords on the site. If it takes too long
for the 'spider' to locate the information, the site will not be indexed frequently.
