There's no turning back from these new millennials and their attraction to all things electronic. Kids and technology go together like peanut butter and jelly, but you don't want all your child's summer computer time to be about zapping online zombies. Instead, take advantage of that intense interest in electronics and inject a touch more learning into your child's summer. The following is a brief overview of some of the newest apps that will not only interest your child, but manage to sneak in some learning.
Utilizing the iPad for reading - As an adult, we know that reading is an important skill that kids need to practice, but sometimes kids need a little push to take more interest in it. Because kids are so intrigued by the iPad, many parents are finding that youngsters are more engaged in reading a book downloaded to the iPad. Books available on this platform are gaining popularity with children and adults alike because it allows the child to engage and interact with the characters and even change the course of the story line. Great summer releases available for download include: Teddy's Day produced by Auryn Apps, Zanny: Born to Run released by Extra Special Kids and Astrojammies from Demibooks (just to name a few). If you don't care to own an electronic reader as of yet, most libraries have them available for public use, as well as the downloadable books for free.
The Story Patch app - Your child's attention and focus can be captured with this app, allowing kids to choose from hundreds of images to use to make their own picture book. Photos of family, friends and pets can be imported to make their story more personal.
The Comic Strip app - Like Story Patch, this app allows kids to import photos onto changeable page layouts complete with bubbles to insert character dialog. A nearly infinite combination of elements makes each child's creation truly unique.
Children's Encyclopedia: the Forest Plants app - Presented by Indigo Kids Co., this app offers a peek into the world of wild plants with bright illustrations and interesting scientific facts. Over 40 different trees, plants, herbs and berries are outlined and set to a peaceful soundtrack featuring actual bird songs.
King of Math Junior app - This intriguing download available from Google Play combines a medieval setting with perplexing math puzzles. By solving the questions correctly, the user increases their social status at court and climbs high enough to be proclaimed King of Math. A free version is available.
Math Challenge: Brain Workout app - Also from Google Play, this game comes with 12 levels, each increasing in difficulty. The game keeps track of scores and ranks all the players, so kids can challenge their friends to a math showdown.
The Reading Rainbow app - The longtime loved PBS show with host LeVar Burton has been adapted for the iPad and includes an unlimited library of children's books and videos. A free parent dashboard is available to log onto if they wish to monitor and keep track of what their child is reading.
