Balanced Lifestyle

What does it mean to be balanced?

To me, it means that you have a handle on the various

elements in your life and don't feel that your heart or

mind is being pulled too hard in any direction. More

often than not, you feel calm, grounded, clear-headed,

and motivated.

A well balanced life is essential for personal

effectiveness, peace of mind and living well.

Whether we work, go to school or are retired, we all have

responsibilities.

The challenge is to balance what we must do with what we

enjoy and choose to do. This is not always easy. If,

however, we are unable to reduce stress and manage a well

balanced life there can be physical and/or emotional

health consequences.

Tips for living a well balanced life:

Physical

1. Do sufficient exercise. Regular pushups, sit-ups,

crunches, jogging or walking are examples.

2. Get sufficient rest. About eight hours of sleep helps

the body repair itself. You may personally need more or

less, as sleep requirements vary between people.

3. Eat healthier. Look online and find the food pyramid,

then try balancing your caloric intake with your

exercise. There are several competing food pyramids, so

pick one or two because following all of them would be

too hard.

4. Find time to relax. Just lie down and think about what

you did before you started relaxing. Think positive or

take up a relaxing hobby like sitting or sleeping.

5. Pick a hobby that you enjoy. Hobbies can counter daily

stress. You could try collecting model trains or postage

stamps.

6. Take care and nurture yourself. You cannot accomplish

anything if you're unhealthy. Many of us think we can

burn the candle at both ends, eat junk food, do very

little exercise, and still function adequately. This may

not create any problem as long as you are young but can

create severe health problems in old age. So take care

and avoid it.

Mental

1. Plan out your day, and set goals. But don't stress out

if you don't accomplish everything just the way you

planned. Remain flexible and try different approaches to

your goals. Remember, sometimes things happen, and you

may not have time for everything. Just be productive in

the time you have.

2. Write, but keep it positive. No negative thoughts. If

you have negative thoughts, do not write them down. Find

someone you can vent negative thoughts to -- pretending

to be happy all the time will do no good for you in the

long run.

3. Find out and develop your talents. Go out and do

activities to find what you like and then pursue the one

or two that strike your fancy.

4. Keep a diary or journal. This would be a good place to

write things. But remember, no negative thoughts.

5. Read. Try classics such as Shakespeare, Jane Austen,

Montaigne, Proust, or Tolstoy. If you are not fond of

these, try the newspaper, a fantasy novel, bibliography,

or mystery. There's something for everyone- check out

your local library to test the waters.

6. Try to set goals that are reasonable to achieve.

Unreasonable goals are harder and will probably just lead

to disappointment.

Spiritual

1. Pray effectively or meditate and learn different types

of asana, such as: the lotus, the corpse, the tree,

downward dog, the snake, etc.

2. Communicate with nature. Go outside, hike, go camping,

or have fishing trip. You may find yourself doing most of

the talking.

3. If you are religious, study the Bible, Qur'an, Gita,

Ramayana, Guru Grant Sahib any Psalms, etc. Learn about

Heaven and Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Buddha, etc.

Social/Emotional

1. Do a good deed for other people.

2. Cooperate with other people that you meet.

3. Listen to other people. There is difference between

just hearing the words and actually paying attention and

listening to them.

4. Synergize mutually advantageous compatibility of

elements, resources or efforts.

Material

1. A good education. To get a good self-supporting job,

master the skills necessary for your advancement. That

way you will not be dependent upon anyone else.

2. The job has to be the one you love. "Love it or leave

it."

3. Money is not that important. Happiness is the most

important thing. Remember people on Forbes 100 are no

happier than average people.

Miscellaneous

1. Know what your priorities are. Examine your values and

decide what's important to you; then set your boundaries.

Avoid becoming overwhelmed by juggling too many big

projects in your life at once. Not knowing what you want

and trying to do everything at once can be a recipe for

disaster instead of the road to leading a well balanced

life. As the saying goes, "do not bite off more than you

can chew".

2. Create an efficient mindset. Be organized and plan

ahead. Make a to-do list in a planner or calendar for

upcoming appointments, impending exams or meetings to

attend. Taking the time to connect with family and

friends will recharge your batteries and make you more

efficient in the long run.

3. Expect the unexpected. If you accept that anything can

happen at any time, it's less likely it throw you off

your stride when it does. Be able to adjust your game

plan.
Note also, that there are times when achieving balance

may not be possible. For instance, you may have a family

or career crisis that needs your immediate and undivided

attention. It may require an exceptional amount of your

time and resources. When that happens, do whatever it

takes and when things go back to normal take time to

refresh and rejuvenate yourself.

4. Maintain a positive mental attitude. Begin each day

with the intention of making the best and most of it. It

may not always go as planned, but it can go more smoothly

if you put it in perspective. Part of living a well-

balanced life is learning how to deal with adversity,

unforeseen events and uncertainty. Be prepared for the

future, but don't worry about it.

Make a promise of living a wholesome and balanced life to

yourself and start following the above tips to make the

promise turn a reality.
