How to Train a Dog - Understanding Dog Behavior

Training your dog is the best idea for dog owners. Your dog will be obedient and you will not be embarrassed. By training and understanding your dog's pedigree you will know right away if there is a problem. Dogs are sensitive creatures and are affected by behavior.

You must find a way to make the training enjoyable for your dog. Fear or impatient behavior will determine how fast your dog will learn. Patience is crucial during training. Impatient behavior will cause fear in your dog and cause them to take longer to learn and/or regress. If your dog feels your fear, they will find it hard to trust you making it impossible to learn.

Understanding Dog Behavior

When a dogs behavior is unsettling it may be because of past treatment. Dogs are natural pack animals and need a leader, if there is no leader they will take the role; showing dominant behavior. If you want to be pack leader and earn trust, be consistent, show or feel no fear. The purpose of training your dog is for you to take the dominant role in your pack.

Stay consistent (to earn trust) with schedule and training. It's important to have a uniform and consistent approach during the training. It applies to all big and small activities in which your dog is involved. Your dog should be clear about the dos and the don'ts. It helps minimize any confusion and improves response.

Always walk and feed your pet before training.

Rewarding dog when they properly obey an order.

Correct your pet at time of disobedience as you would a child.

Show love and attention when it is appropriate after training is completed.

Dog Behavior Meaning

All dogs have certain behavior that is universal; it may not make sense to humans but should be recognized by all pet owners. For example:

Dogs sniff each other as a greeting.

Dogs mark territory by urinating.

Dogs get to know neighboring dogs by smelling urine or feces.

Certain pedigrees have to be walked longer to release their natural high energy.

Without those walks you may misunderstand your pet's disobedience other than a way to release excess energy. Punishing your pet for your misunderstandings can become a never-ending unwinnable cycle.

Know your pet and consider it when training. Some animals will learn faster than others; but with total trust, proper care and patience it will happen.
